Fileverses

Free BMP to ICNS converter

Convert BMP to amacOS ICNS icon family.

Fileverses turns a BMP into an ICNS icon family in your browser for a macOS app or asset workflow. It centers the decoded image inside six PNG icon sizes, so review the small versions; it does not crop, remove a background, or create a 1024px icon.

About this converter

Free BMP to ICNS conversion, built for a real workflow.

BMP is a Windows-oriented raster bitmap, while ICNS is the macOS icon container used to bundle several icon representations in one file. This route decodes the BMP in your browser and creates transparent PNG entries at 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixels. Each entry scales the complete image to fit within a square and centers it with transparent padding rather than cropping it. That is useful when a macOS workflow specifically asks for ICNS, but it cannot turn a photo into a well-designed icon, remove an opaque BMP background, add a 1024-pixel representation, or recreate editable source artwork. Inspect the small icon sizes and test the ICNS in the intended app packaging workflow before delivery.

How it works

Upload once.
Export ICNS.

01

Add the BMP

Drop, paste, or choose the bitmap intended for a macOS icon workflow. It stays in your browser during conversion.

02

Keep ICNS selected

ICNS is preselected for a recipient that specifically needs a macOS icon family rather than the original Windows bitmap.

03

Convert and inspect sizes

Download the ICNS, then inspect the 16px and larger versions in the destination workflow. Check centering, legibility, padding, and any opaque background before packaging.

Made for real pipelines

Convert BMP to ICNS
01

Six-size ICNS family

Package 16px through 512px PNG icon representations in one ICNS file for an explicit macOS handoff.

02

Centered without cropping

The full decoded bitmap is scaled to fit each square and padded rather than automatically cropped or reframed.

03

Test the smallest sizes

Check legibility, padding, and background behavior in the receiving app or packaging workflow before delivery.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Which icon sizes does this BMP to ICNS converter create?+

Fileverses packages PNG icon representations at 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixels. It does not add a 1024px representation.

Will BMP to ICNS crop or resize my artwork to fill the icon?+

No. Each icon size uses contain scaling: the complete decoded image is centered inside a square with transparent padding as needed. Review small sizes because thin details or wide artwork can become hard to read.

Does converting a BMP to ICNS remove its background?+

No. ICNS supports transparency through its PNG entries, but this converter only preserves decoded transparent pixels. An opaque BMP remains opaque; it does not detect, erase, or replace a background.

When is BMP to ICNS useful?+

Use it when a macOS application, packaging workflow, or asset handoff explicitly needs an ICNS icon container. It is not a substitute for designing separate icon artwork when the small sizes need custom simplification.

Can this conversion make a bitmap into a polished macOS app icon?+

No. The route creates scaled PNG icon representations from the decoded BMP. It cannot recreate vector artwork, improve source detail, crop intelligently, or guarantee that every size will be legible.

Does Fileverses upload BMP files to make ICNS icons?+

No. This BMP-to-ICNS conversion runs in your browser, so the source bitmap is not sent to a conversion server.
