Supported files
The fixed profile turns the GIF’s first video stream into H.264 in an MKV container. GIF has no audio stream, so the result is video-only.
How it works
Choose a non-empty .gif file of 100 MB or less that host FFmpeg can read.
Start the sequential server queue to encode the GIF’s first video stream as H.264 in a new MKV.
Download each separately named .mkv result and test it in the player or workflow that needs MKV.
GIF-to-video boundaries
Audio, metadata, chapters, and source structure are removed. There are no controls for trimming, scaling, frame rate, codec, or quality.
Convert GIF to MKVOnly non-empty .gif files up to 100 MB are accepted, and the source must be readable by host FFmpeg.
GIF has no audio stream. The profile maps only its first video stream, so a successful MKV contains H.264 video and no audio.
This is not a remux. FFmpeg creates a new H.264 video, so appearance, timing, file size, and compatibility can differ from the GIF.
Metadata and chapters are removed; there are no trim, crop, resize, frame-rate, bitrate, codec, quality, or stream-selection controls.
GIF to MKV FAQ
No. GIF sources do not provide an audio stream, and this profile writes video-only MKV output.
A successful result uses newly encoded H.264 video in an MKV container.
No. The GIF video stream is decoded and re-encoded; this is not a container-only change.
The first readable GIF video stream is converted, but a new encode can change visual output or timing. Exact equivalence is not promised.
No. This route has no trim, crop, resize, frame-rate, bitrate, codec, or quality controls.
Source metadata and chapters are removed. There are no subtitles, attachments, alternate streams, or audio tracks in the output.
Use a non-empty .gif file up to 100 MB that host FFmpeg can read. Test the downloaded MKV in its intended destination.
