Free online EPS to ICNS guidance

Prepare an ICNS icon from EPSwith a render-first workflow.

Fileverses does not decode or accept EPS uploads, so it cannot convert an EPS directly to ICNS. First render the EPS in a PostScript-capable app, then add the resulting browser-readable raster image here to package a six-size ICNS icon family on your device.

About this converter

Free EPS to ICNS conversion, built for a real workflow.

EPS is a PostScript-based exchange format that can hold vector instructions, fonts, placed raster art, and a preview, while ICNS is a macOS icon container. A browser must first turn EPS artwork into pixels at a chosen size before it can be packaged as an ICNS icon; that rendering does not preserve editable EPS vectors, fonts, or layout objects. Fileverses rejects EPS uploads because its browser converter only decodes supported raster images. After rendering the EPS elsewhere to a browser-readable image such as PNG or JPG, this page packages the decoded pixels into PNG-backed ICNS entries at 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixels. Each entry fits the complete rendered image within a square and centers it with transparent padding rather than automatically cropping or reframing it. This is useful when a macOS workflow explicitly asks for an ICNS file, but it does not create an app bundle, add a 1024-pixel icon entry, turn rendered pixels back into vectors, remove an opaque background, or guarantee that detailed artwork remains legible at small sizes.

How it works

Upload once.
Export ICNS.

01

Render the EPS elsewhere

Open the EPS in a PostScript-capable application and export a browser-readable raster image, preferably PNG when you need rendered transparency. Choose the final pixel dimensions there because Fileverses cannot decode EPS directly.

02

Add the rendered image

Drop, paste, or choose the exported PNG, JPG, WebP, or another supported raster image on this page. Keep ICNS selected for a macOS workflow that specifically requires an icon-family file.

03

Download and inspect the icon family

Create the ICNS on your device, then inspect its 16px and 32px entries in the receiving macOS project or icon viewer. Check centering, padding, background behavior, and legibility before delivery.

Make ICNS from a rendered EPS image
01

Clear EPS prerequisite

Start with the right step: render EPS in a PostScript-capable application because this browser tool cannot decode EPS uploads directly.

02

Six-size ICNS family

Package a supported rendered image into 16px through 512px PNG-backed icon entries in one ICNS file for an explicit macOS handoff.

03

Small-size review

Inspect centering, transparent padding, background behavior, and legibility in the receiving macOS workflow before relying on the icon.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Can Fileverses convert an EPS file directly to ICNS?+

No. Fileverses rejects EPS uploads because this browser converter does not decode or rasterize PostScript/EPS. Render the EPS to a browser-readable raster image in a PostScript-capable application first, then use that image as the ICNS source.

What should I render an EPS to before making an ICNS icon?+

Render it to a browser-readable raster image at the dimensions you need. PNG is a useful choice when the external render already has transparency; JPG is suitable for an opaque image. The ICNS conversion cannot recover detail or resolution after that render.

Which macOS icon sizes does this rendered-image-to-ICNS workflow create?+

It packages PNG-backed ICNS entries at 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixels. It does not create a 1024-pixel icon entry or a macOS application bundle.

Will the ICNS converter crop my rendered EPS artwork into a square?+

No. It scales the complete decoded image to fit within each square and centers it with transparent padding as needed. A wide, tall, or intricate source can look small at the lowest icon sizes, so inspect those entries before use.

Will the resulting ICNS keep EPS vectors or remove a background?+

No. The external EPS render converts the appearance to pixels, so the ICNS cannot retain editable EPS vectors, text, fonts, or layout objects. It also does not detect, erase, or replace a background; an opaque rendered image remains opaque.

Are my rendered images uploaded when I create an ICNS file?+

No. For supported raster inputs, Fileverses packages the ICNS in your browser and does not send the image to a conversion server. The separate EPS rendering step happens in the application you choose.
