Free online ICNS to ICO guidance

Make an ICO icon from ICNSwith an extraction-first workflow.

Fileverses does not decode or accept ICNS uploads, so it cannot convert an ICNS file directly to ICO. First extract the intended icon representation with ICNS-aware software, then add the resulting browser-readable raster image here to package a four-size PNG-backed ICO on your device.

About this converter

Free ICNS to ICO conversion, built for a real workflow.

ICNS is a macOS icon container that can hold multiple icon representations and sizes, while ICO is an icon container used by software that explicitly requests an .ico file. Fileverses rejects direct ICNS uploads because its browser conversion path starts with a decodable raster image rather than an ICNS parser or entry extractor. First use ICNS-aware software to extract the intended icon representation as a browser-readable raster image such as PNG, JPG, or WebP, at the dimensions needed by the receiving workflow. Fileverses then packages the decoded raster pixels into PNG-backed ICO entries at 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixels. Each entry contains the complete image with contain scaling, centered on transparent padding when needed; the exporter does not automatically crop or reframe it. This is an ICO file only: it does not configure a favicon or an application. It cannot retain the ICNS container or alternate representations, recover vectors or detail, create transparency, remove an opaque background, or guarantee compatibility with bitmap-only legacy ICO readers.

How it works

Upload once.
Export ICO.

01

Extract the intended ICNS icon

Use ICNS-aware software to choose and export the icon representation you need as a browser-readable raster image, such as PNG, JPG, or WebP. Choose the needed dimensions there because Fileverses cannot decode an ICNS upload directly.

02

Add the extracted raster image

Drop, paste, or choose the exported raster image on this page and keep ICO selected when the receiving workflow specifically requires an ICO icon container. Stay within 50 files, 50 MB per file, and 12 megapixels after decoding.

03

Create and inspect the ICO

Create the ICO locally, then inspect its 16px, 32px, 48px, and 256px PNG-backed entries in the receiving workflow or an icon viewer. Check centering, transparent padding, legibility, background behavior, and compatibility before delivery.

Convert without uploading your assets. Switch outputs anytime — web, print, icons, and document targets from the same batch.

Make ICO from an extracted ICNS icon
01

Clear ICNS prerequisite

Begin by extracting the intended icon representation with ICNS-aware software because this browser tool cannot decode or accept a direct ICNS upload.

02

Four PNG-backed icon sizes

Package a supported extracted raster image into 16px, 32px, 48px, and 256px PNG-backed entries in one ICO file when a receiving workflow explicitly requires it.

03

Contain-scaled local output

The complete image is centered with transparent padding rather than automatically cropped; inspect the small entries, source limits, output size, and receiving-software support before delivery.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Can Fileverses convert an ICNS file directly to ICO?+

No. Fileverses rejects ICNS uploads because this browser converter does not decode ICNS containers or extract their icon entries. Use ICNS-aware software to export the intended representation as a browser-readable raster image first, then use that image as the ICO source.

What should I extract from ICNS before creating an ICO?+

Export the icon representation you intend to use as a browser-readable raster image, such as PNG, JPG, or WebP, at the dimensions the recipient needs. This workflow packages the decoded image pixels and cannot recover missing detail or select an ICNS entry for you.

Which sizes are in the ICO output?+

The exporter packages PNG-backed ICO entries at 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixels. It creates an ICO file only; it does not configure a favicon or an application.

Will the ICO converter crop my extracted icon into a square?+

No. It scales the complete decoded image to fit within each square and centers it with transparent padding as needed. A wide, tall, or detailed source can look small at the lowest icon sizes, so inspect those entries before use.

What input and output-size limits apply?+

You can add up to 50 supported raster files, each under 50 MB and no more than 12 megapixels after decoding. The downloaded ICO contains four PNG entries, so its size depends on their rendered pixels and is not guaranteed to be smaller than the extracted image.

Will the ICO preserve ICNS artwork, work in every reader, and stay local?+

The extracted image is raster pixels, not the ICNS container, other representations, vectors, or editable artwork; the workflow does not create transparency or remove an opaque background. PNG-backed ICO entries may not work in bitmap-only legacy readers, so test the receiver. For supported raster inputs, Fileverses processes the file in your browser without sending it to a conversion server.
