About this converter

Free GIF to ICO conversion, built for a real workflow.

GIF may contain multiple timed frames, but this browser conversion decodes the GIF into one canvas image and uses its first displayed frame. The result is a still ICO file, not an animation, and it cannot select or export later GIF frames. Fileverses packages that decoded image into four PNG-backed ICO entries: 16, 32, 48, and 256 pixels. Each entry scales the complete image to fit within a square, centers it, and leaves transparent padding where the source aspect ratio does not fill the square. That keeps the full frame visible, but wide, tall, or detailed artwork can appear small at 16px or 32px. The ICO contains modern PNG image data, so test it in the receiving software when support for bitmap-only legacy ICO files is required. Conversion cannot restore GIF color detail or create transparency that is not present in the decoded pixels.

How it works

Upload once.
Export ICO.

01

Choose the GIF frame you need

For an animated GIF, make sure its first displayed frame is the still image you want. This route creates one icon from that frame, not a sequence of frames.

02

Add the GIF and keep ICO selected

Drop, paste, or choose a browser-readable GIF. ICO is selected on this route and packages the decoded image into four PNG-backed square entries.

03

Convert, download, and inspect

Download the ICO created on your device, then check the 16px, 32px, 48px, and 256px entries in the software that will receive it. Review small-size legibility, centering, padding, and compatibility.

Good to know

Questions, answered.

Is this GIF to ICO converter free and online?+

Yes. It is free to use online, needs no account, and creates the ICO locally in your browser.

Will an animated GIF stay animated in the ICO file?+

No. The browser draws the GIF's first displayed frame to one canvas image, then creates a still ICO. Timing, loops, and additional GIF frames are not included.

Can I choose a later GIF frame for the ICO?+

No. This conversion path uses the first displayed frame and has no frame picker or frame-extraction control. Prepare a separate still image first if you need a different frame.

Which sizes are inside the downloaded ICO?+

The ICO packages four PNG-backed square entries: 16px, 32px, 48px, and 256px. Check the receiving software if it requires a different size or a legacy bitmap-only ICO format.

How does the converter fit a rectangular GIF into square icon sizes?+

It scales the whole decoded frame to fit inside each square and centers it with transparent padding as needed. It does not crop or reframe the image, so a wide or tall source may look smaller at 16px and 32px.

What happens to transparency and older ICO readers?+

PNG-backed ICO entries can retain transparency already in the decoded GIF pixels, but this tool does not create transparency or remove an opaque background. Because the entries are PNG-backed rather than legacy bitmap ICO images, test the file in older receiving software.
