Free Online GIF to ICNS still-icon maker
Turn a GIF into a macOS ICNS icon family in your browser. For an animated GIF, Fileverses decodes one browser-rendered frame into a still image; it does not preserve animation, timing, or a sequence of frames. The result packages that still image into six PNG-backed icon sizes on your device.

About this converter
GIF can contain a simple animation, while ICNS is a macOS icon container made of still icon images. This browser workflow decodes a GIF to one canvas image and packages that one browser-rendered frame—not the animation timeline—into PNG-backed ICNS entries at 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixels. Each entry uses contain scaling: the complete decoded image is scaled to fit a square, centered, and surrounded by transparent padding when needed. It does not automatically crop, reframe, or choose animation frames. Existing decoded transparency can be carried into the PNG entries, but an opaque GIF remains opaque. This is an icon-family file only: it does not make a macOS app bundle, add a 1024-pixel entry, preserve GIF animation, recover detail from a small or palette-limited source, or turn the image into editable vector artwork.
How it works
Drop, paste, or choose a GIF up to 50 MB. Animated GIFs are accepted as a still-icon source, but this browser workflow uses one rendered frame rather than preserving the animation.
ICNS is preselected for a macOS workflow that specifically needs an icon-family file. The tool prepares six PNG-backed square entries from the complete decoded image.
Create the ICNS locally, then inspect the 16px and 32px entries in the receiving macOS project or icon viewer. Check centering, transparent padding, background behavior, and legibility before delivery.

Make a still ICNS icon from GIFTurn one browser-rendered GIF frame into an ICNS icon family without claiming to preserve animation, timing, or a sequence of frames.
Package 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixel entries in one ICNS file for a macOS workflow that explicitly requires an icon family.
Contain scaling keeps the complete decoded image centered with transparent padding instead of automatically cropping or reframing the artwork.
Good to know
No. Fileverses decodes an animated GIF into one browser-rendered still frame for the ICNS icon entries. It does not preserve animation, loops, timing, a frame sequence, or provide a frame-picker/extraction tool.
It packages PNG-backed ICNS entries at 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 pixels. It does not create a 1024-pixel icon entry or a macOS application bundle.
No. It scales the complete decoded image to fit within each square, centers it, and leaves transparent padding where needed. A wide, tall, or intricate GIF may look small at the lower icon sizes, so review those entries before use.
PNG-backed ICNS entries can retain transparency already present in the decoded GIF pixels. The conversion does not detect, remove, or replace an opaque background, so an opaque GIF remains opaque.
You can queue up to 50 files, with each file up to 50 MB; images over 12 megapixels are rejected during rasterization. The icon cannot restore source detail, colors, or sharpness, and GIF palette limits can be noticeable after downscaling.
Yes. The tool is free, needs no account, and processes supported GIF files in your browser rather than sending them to a conversion server.
